Jewson looks to boost community spirit with funding programme

Jewson has revealed a shortlist of community projects in with a chance to win a share of the œ100,000 prize fund, available as part of Jewson’s Building Better Communities initiative.

Over 2,000 entries were taken in response to Jewson’s call for nominations of community building projects in need of work. The entries, which Jewson says covered projects of all shapes and sizes, were whittled down to a shortlist of 63 projects by a team of 60 judges that included Jewson employees and supplier partners.

The judges were instructed to consider the legacy of the project; the impact it would have within its locality; the sustainable building products mentioned, or that could be used; the strength of application; and proximity to a Jewson branch.

David Fenton, marketing director at Jewson, said: “The Building Better Communities scheme has received an incredible response and we’ve seen more than 2,000 entries from people across the UK. It was really difficult to compile a shortlist from so many worthwhile projects.

“It’s clear that helping projects such as these will play a vital role in improving communities.”

Jewson says its initial research into communities across the United Kingdom found that 70% of residents felt there was average to little community spirit in the area where they live. The company hopes its latest initiative will go some way to changing this feeling in the communities selected for funding.

A number of suppliers have committed to supporting Building Better Communities, including British Gypsum, Marshalls, Mastercrete, SterlingOSB, SAM and VELUX.
