John Brash keeps industry on track with regulations

John Brash Take it As Red 1John Brash & Co. has launched a new campaign designed to ensure the roofing industry works in line with the recently updated safety and quality rules of BS 5534.

A number of teams from the roofing batten manufacturer will take to the road to visit more than 300 key venues across the UK to reinforce the key messages of the British Standard, which introduced new rules earlier this year.

The East Midlands-based timber company has produced 20,000 copies of a new guide to the British Standard for slating and tiling for pitched roofs and vertical cladding with the help of John Dodd, the author of British Standard BS 5534:2014.

It will be supported by promotional packs that include point-of-sale material, banners and t-shirts to be handed out by John Brash’s staff at selected builders’ merchants and roofing centres up and down the UK.

Christian Brash, chairman of John Brash & Co. (which celebrates its 110th anniversary this year), handed out the first packs to a builders’ merchant in Newark. He said: “This is the most important development in the roofing industry in the last five years and it’s vital that this standard is fully embraced and fully supported. This is why we felt it was so important to do our bit and keep the issue of BS 5534:2014 at the top of the industry’s agenda.”

The company’s new guide has been designed to help builders, roofers, tilers and staff at builders’ merchants get to grips with what the new rules for roofing both new and existing properties actually mean in practice.

Mr. Brash added: “BS 5534:2014 is great news for the roofing industry, as it reflects a lot of the improvements, particularly in working practices and quality of products, that have already been made.

“It occurred to us that a quick guide to the standard that highlighted the key facts and changes would be useful to the industry, so we worked with John Dodd, the chairman of the BSI committee, who was responsible for drafting the standard, to create an accompaniment that is simple and digestible.”

As part of the campaign, John Brash is encouraging anyone who uses its JB-Red timber roofing batten to enter a free prize draw for a Paslode nail gun worth £500.
