Adding the finishing touch to regeneration

A regeneration project to provide “well-designed, sustainable buildings” in the heart of the Black Country is delivering its objective, through its use of roofing membrane.

The final phase of the Walsall Waterfront development sees the conclusion of Kier Property’s redevelopment of 17 acres of previously vacant and derelict land to the north of the town centre. The most challenging part of the project is said to be the construction of two units – one approximately 570m2 which is divided into three, and the other is a stand-alone 325m2 structure.

Main contractor PPE employed FCB Roofing to handle the construction of the roofs on both buildings. With warm roof construction, the shallow pitch metal deck was then covered with Protan SE1.6mm thick polyester-reinforced PVC single ply membrane, mechanically fixed, and detailed around the M&S penetrations and access hatches on each block.

Alan Horton, of FCB Roofing, explained: “One of the main objectives of the strategy behind the development is the delivery of a high-quality public realm using appropriate materials to help ensure provision of well-designed, sustainable buildings. We have an established relationship with PPE, based on and as a result of Protan, so the brand was a preferred choice from the outset. Protan’s commitment to sustainability as a company and through its products further helped meet the project’s strategic objectives. An additional benefit was a 20 year warranty on the roof membrane.”
