Protan delivers ?best value’ at leisure centre

A roofing solution from Protan is being used by East Staffordshire Borough Council to redevelop the Uttoxeter Leisure Centre.

The company says Uttoxeter’s future leisure needs will be protected long term, via the Council’s use of its single ply roofing membrane. Some 2,000m2 of mechanically fixed dark grey Protan SE1.6mm standard overlap membrane has been used to create a new roof over the upgraded and extended facility.

Under the scheme, the existing sports hall and pool tank have been retained, with a new steel frame block added, comprising changing rooms, fitness facility, dance studio, caf‚, crŠche and spectator viewing areas.

Mark Rizk, shared services manager for East Staffordshire Borough Council, said: “Retaining and upgrading existing – and adding – new facilities was deemed the most appropriate option to meet the future leisure / sports needs of the Borough. The œ3.9m investment will mean the existing Centre will be changed out of all recognition. A new roof was a key criterium from the outset to extend the existing building’s life as long as possible.”

Jag Rai, managing director of the project’s roofing contractor, Phase 9 Roofing, said: “Single ply was specified, [so] I proposed Protan as it is more aesthetically pleasing than competitive materials, is good to work with and price competitive. Its superior quality and longevity, with the technical support Protan and I brought, convinced the client that best value would be achieved all round using the material.”

Protan SE – available in 1.2mm, 1.6mm and 1.8mm – has been developed to cope with even the most extreme weather conditions without detriment; it is certified to ≤ -30ø. Hot-air welded at joints and mechanically fixed to the roof, the membrane achieves durability in excess of 30 years, with air leakage controlled / minimised in line with the latest Building Regulations. Protan SE membrane is also certified to deliver, and potentially surpass, the energy efficiency requirements laid down in Approved Document L, and achieve an A+ rating under the Green Guide.
