Quality was key for contractor Latchmore Roofing in a prestigious domestic project in one of Britain’s most famous and scenic estuaries.

Latchmore was called in to undertake various roofing works in the £multi-million property at Brooklands Quay, Southampton, overlooking the Hamble estuary and The Solent. Latchmore’s solution, to weatherproof five roofs and two balconies on the main building, and the 170m2 garage roof, was to utilise Protan SE1.6mm single ply membrane.

Sam Bond, technical manager at Protan, explained: “It’s a beautiful but very exposed location, where the facades are going to be subjected to higher than average levels of aggressive substances (salt water), wind. Single ply was chosen for certain areas. Latchmore has used Protan before with the specific construction company involved: they were impressed with its performance on those previous jobs, so it was the logical choice at Brooklands Quay.”

The Protan membrane has been mechanically fixed over insulation on a ply deck on all the flat roofs and balconies on the project; Latchmore has further interfaced further lead and tile work on pitched roofs on the property.

Designed to cope with extreme weather conditions without detriment, Protan membranes achieve durability for up to 30 years. In addition, air leakage is controlled in line with the latest Building Regulations.

Manufactured at the company’s headquarters in Norway, Protan roofing solutions have been independently tested and certified by the BBA as having an expected durability in excess of 30 years. This is supported by the fact the company has roofs that have been in place for 30+ years without performance-affecting degradation. A full support service, from NBS specification and in-house CAD design through to technical advice and training is provided from Protan UK’s Warrington office.
