SPRA takes steps to tackle the skills crisis

The Single Ply Roofing Association (SPRA) has just approved its 10th member to deliver the new Basic Competency Programme (BCP), meaning that two-thirds of its manufacturer members are now approved for this training.

The BCP adds value to manufacturers’ existing training programmes as it maps course content against the Level 2 qualification.

SPRA says its members are throwing their support behind this new scheme to improve skills, knowledge and understanding as it can be the first step to a trainee achieving a full Level 2 NVQ in single ply roofing, and give them access to a blue Skilled Worker CSCS card.

Axter, Bauder, Carlisle Construction Materials, Danosa UK, ICB (Waterproofing), Icopal, IKO Polymeric, Protan, SIKA and SIG Design & Technology can all now offer the BCP.

Aimed at experienced workers, successful completion of the course will allow the trainee to apply for a special Experienced Worker CSCS card, which is valid for three years. The trainee should then complete the full Level 2 NVQ within this time through either On-site Assessment and Training (OSAT), a Specialist Upskilling Programme (SUP) or a Specialist Apprenticeship Programme (SAP).

Cathie Clarke, CEO of SPRA, commented: “News stories about the lack of skilled workers are becoming a daily occurrence both in the construction and general media, and it remains one of the most important issues affecting the whole of the construction sector, not just roofing. SPRA members are committed to training, and take-up of the BCP is another example of this.”

The association says a properly skilled and trained workforce is critical to the continued success of the single ply industry. Visit the SPRA website to watch the SPRA training video and find out more about the BCP and Level 2 qualification.

SPRA says it is always interested in hearing from single ply assessors and trainers who may want to work with the association. For those who may be interested in becoming a trainer or assessor, SPRA can access Train-the-Trainer funding through the CITB.
