Cardiff scheme is a capital success for Firestone

Firestone Building Products’ RubberGard EPDM roofing membrane has been used to finish the roofs of Three Capital Quarter; a seven-storey landmark commercial scheme in the centre of Cardiff’s Commercial Enterprise Zone.

Specification for the roofs of the 77,931ft2 grade A office building designed by architects, Morgan 2 Hayman, was driven by the developer, JR Smart, after the company had been impressed with the ease of installation and performance of Firestone’s RubberGard EPDM membrane on its previous Capital Quarter schemes.

Gary Foster from JR Smart commented: “We had used Firestone’s RubberGard EPDM membrane on previous schemes on the Capital Quarter development and had been very pleased with how quickly and easily it could be installed with a neat finish.

“The service life of the roof is very important for these high calibre office schemes as it will reduce maintenance requirements and ensure the building retains its Grade A performance. We’re confident the strength and durability of RubberGard EPDM will give us a fit and forget solution.”

The RubberGard EPDM membrane was installed by Firestone Licensed Contractor, Envirotek, on the main roof area at 7th floor level along with the terraces at 6th and 1st floor level. The contractor was involved in the project at design stage to ensure that sufficient provision was made for drainage to maximise roof performance and avoid any risk of standing water.

The scheme involved installation of a tapered insulation scheme, creating a fall to the drainage points, followed by the RubberGard EPDM. The membrane was interfaced with window cleaning abseiling hooks around the perimeter of the seventh storey roof, along with steel columns that support maintenance gantries, structural steelwork installed on the roof to create visual shielding for rooftop plant and support steelwork for a solar PV installation, with Firestone’s QuickSeam FormFlash used to fully encapsulate all details.

Following installation of the Firestone RubberGard EPDM membrane, all the roof and terrace areas were finished using 600 x 600 x 50mm paving slabs, which have been mounted onto support pads to protect the RubberGard EPDM membrane from abrasion and aid drainage.

John McMullan, commercial manager at Firestone Building Products, said: “Capital Quarter creates a vibrant new business district for Cardiff and has attracted some major name occupiers from a wide range of sectors. Three Capital Quarter is part of that commercial success story and we’re delighted to be associated with such a prestigious office building.”
