Building envelope specialist, ITP Ltd, supplied the award-winning Stamisol Safe One breather membrane for a major redevelopment at Churchill Hospital in Oxford.
The product was specified for Phase 3 as part of a wide-ranging programme of upgrades. The new facilities include a new-build Cancer Centre, incorporating a surgery and diagnostic centre with 10 state-of-the-art theatres, recovery wards, a high dependency unit and a separate private patient’s wing. Steffian Bradley Architects created the design which includes interlinked blocks built with terracotta tiles, glass curtains of windows, and metal panelling on the site’s west side. Contractor, Mili Construction, installed Stamisol Safe One behind the cladding, providing a highly breathable membrane to allow moisture to escape the building and prevent the build-up of condensation in the insulation layer.
Stamisol Safe One also offers outstanding protection against weathering, making it an ideal choice for open-jointed cladding. The membrane is aged-tested and has a W1 rating for water tightness, waterproofing of 7,000mm, and UV resistance of 5,000 hours. Its Euroclass A2 fire rating is in keeping with minimum requirements for cladding on high-rise and higher risk buildings.
ITP Account Manager, Marisa Schofield, said: “Stamisol Safe One has become a widely specified solution for high-rise residential projects, but it’s also increasingly popular for hospitals which are categorised as a higher-risk building under post-Grenfell fire safety regulations. Architects and contractors can choose Stamisol Safe One with total peace of mind as it’s independently tested to EN 13501-1 as a full system, including adhesives, to ensure that safety standards aren’t compromised during the installation. Other breather membranes are not fire tested as a full system, including adhesives and membrane, and therefore can’t offer the same certainty, reliability and durability.”
Manufactured by Serge Ferrari, Stamisol Safe One gained industry recognition in 2022 when it scooped Product of the Year in the Façade Design and Engineering Awards. As well as being the UK suppliers of Stamisol Safe One, ITP also manufactures its own range of advanced vapour control layers, roofing underlays, house wraps and ground barrier membranes for development on industrial brownfield and contaminated land.
