Roofer discovers the power of social media

Henry Channon is a roofing contractor that specialises in slating, tiling, flat roofing and leadwork. His company, which is called Channon Roofing, is based in Norbury, South London. Henry wrote to RCI to tell us about a recent roofing project he undertook in Balham, London, which gained him more publicity than he anticipated. Henry explained: “Over the years I have done a large number of traditional slate and lead roofs and I like to try out old techniques and skills wherever I can. I was asked to re-slate this small bay roof for a client, and I asked him if he wanted something original.”

The client agreed and Henry explained to RCI the steps that he took: “I stripped the roof and close boarded it. I then used some old Welsh Slates that I had refurbished and cut by hand to create this fish scale roof. All the lead hips were bossed in code 5 sheet lead.”

Henry posted a photo of the finished project onto his LinkedIn page and was shocked to discover how many people visited the work online. He said: “To date, I have had nearly 4,000 views. Judging by the endorsements that I have had worldwide from architects and surveyors, there is obviously a demand for ornamental slating.”

Henry says his story shows the commercial benefit of a business like his using social media to showcase previous projects and creating interest around the business.
