The UKGBC responds to Industrial Strategy

The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) has responded to the Government’s Industrial Strategy White Paper, which was published on Monday, November 28.

Julie Hirigoyen, chief executive of UKGBC, said: “It is very encouraging to see clean growth recognised in the Industrial Strategy as one of the four key challenges facing the UK economy. To truly build a Britain fit for the future, we must seize the unique opportunities that the low carbon economy presents – driving the productivity and competitiveness of UK businesses, whilst ensuring the health of our planet for future generations.

“With the built environment sector able to influence 42% of the UK’s carbon emissions, we welcome the construction sector deal, with its new focus on the whole life cost of projects. But to ensure this approach gathers pace, the focus on whole life costs must be reflected across all relevant policy areas, including Building Regulations and government procurement standards.

“Future deals with construction must also go further by recognising the importance of our existing building stock as an opportunity to create jobs and cut emissions.”
