CUPA PIZARRAS’ Heavy 3 chosen to restore traditional appearance for new Kingshouse Hotel

CUPA PIZARRAS’ Heavy 3 slate has been selected to deliver the traditional look of Scottish slate for the historic Kingshouse Hotel’s redevelopment and extension.

Plans were made to redevelop the hotel to improve the facilities and take advantage of the increasing tourism to the area.

The £12 million redevelopment involved building a new 57 room hotel and restoring the original 18th century Kingshouse Inn.

Natural slate was specified for the roof to continue the style of the original building and to match with the inn building that would be retained.

Heavy 3 slate was chosen for its close resemblance to the traditional Ballachulish slate, which was produced locally between 1693 and 1955 and used on the original Kingshouse’s roof.

To intentionally evoke the local landscape’s shape, the roof is a series of irregular pitches totalling approximately 1,800m2 of Heavy 3 slates in 500 x 250mm format installed across its entirety. The slate was also continued into the cladding with 350m2 of Heavy 3 slate in 400 x 250mm format.
