Cupa Pizarras sponsors World Skills Live: the final heat

Cupa Pizarras has sponsored the final Roof Slating and Tiling heats of the World Skills Live competition 2018.

Held at Birmingham NEC, from the 15- 17 of November, World Skills Live 2018 is the largest multi-trade competition in the UK for construction trainees and apprentices.

Seven contestants for the Roof Slating and Tiling final heats were required to demonstrate time management, commitment and technical ability. It was also necessary to show accurate interpretation of drawings alongside cutting, pointing and application techniques – using the correct PPE to safely create a secure structure, free from defects.

As a sponsor, Cupa Pizarras supplied over 4,000 of its natural slates for the competition and provided polo shirts for all contestants. Extracted from its quarries in Spain, Cupa Pizarras natural slates are 100% natural and go through exhaustive quality control. Extremely durable, water and fire proof, the slates are globally recognised and exceed all international standards.

The Gold prize winner of the Roof Slating and Tiling category was Joe Turner, who has recently completed his NVQ Level 2 and NVQ Level 3 at Leeds College of Building. Joe was praised for his accuracy and natural flair.

Joe commented: “It’s very exciting and overwhelming to win, but it also feels excellent to be rewarded for my hard work. I’ve found the competition really enjoyable and it’s been great to see what other colleges are like and what techniques they use; while also learning new and different things from a variety of roofing apprentices from across the country.

“Cupa Pizarras has provided great support to me and my college whilst I’ve been training, and I’ve even been out to Spain on a trip to the quarry to see the origins of the slate. It was fascinating and gave me some valuable insight into what a high-quality product it is.”

Yasmin Herfegar, marketing assistant at Cupa Pizarras, said: “This was such a remarkable and rewarding event, and we were very proud to support and sponsor the final heat. It’s great to see the Roof Slating and Tiling finalists using our slate so comfortably and watching them live really highlighted the skills and talent required for roofing; it’s not an easy job!”

“All seven finalists performed spectacularly and should be very proud of themselves – we are very lucky to have such talented roofers in the industry.”

Simon Dixon, training manager and technical officer at the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC), commented: “I have been involved in this competition for many years, and each time I am so surprised by the high standard of work that is produced by our contestants, and the impressive level of attention to detail – Joe Turner’s work was outstanding.

“Cupa Pizarras saved the day by stepping in, as you cannot beat having high-quality materials for the apprentices. We’re grateful for all sponsorships and we would not have been able to do it without the company’s support.”
