A. Proctor Group’s high-performance membranes chosen for the Dean Hotel

High performance membranes from the A. Proctor Group have been selected in the construction of the new Dean Hotel in Cork, Ireland.

The 114-bed hotel with rooftop restaurant is just part of an impressive major rejuvenation scheme across a six-acre site at Horgan’s Quay, which will include apartments, offices, bars and restaurants.

The Dean Hotel has been designed by Wilson Architecture, with BAM Ireland as the main contractor for the project. Specialist roofing and cladding contractor Deane Roofing and Cladding was appointed for the façade works.

A key requirement was to produce an eight-storey building which meets the highest standards in terms of fire, acoustic and thermal performance.

Instead of using a traditional internal air barrier, Wraptite, a self-adhesive, vapour permeable, airtight membrane from A.Proctor Group was applied externally, quickly and easily as part of the rainscreen system.

Shane Kerrisk, project architect, explained: “Wraptite was chosen for the ease with which it could be fixed, and for its provision of a watertight line when used as part of the Kingspan K-Roc Rainscreen System, and its performance in relation to fire. It also removed the requirement to tape and joint the substrate.”

Wraptite is the only self-adhering vapour permeable air barrier certified by the British Board of Agrément (BBA), and combines the important properties of vapour permeability and airtightness in one self-adhering membrane.

Whilst internal air barriers will need to accommodate building services such as electrical, lighting, heating and drainage systems, Wraptite is an external air barrier, that allows for an almost penetration-free airtight layer, which can be installed faster and more robustly. It fully bonds to virtually any substrate and requires no mechanical attachment, seals or tapes to suppress air leakage around junctions or penetrations.

Additionally, Procheck FR200 was selected as a fire-retardant vapour control layer on the project. It has a Reaction to Fire classification of B, s1 –d0, according to the Euroclass system, which provides assurance of fire performance for the structure.

Procheck FR200 is an air and vapour tight membrane, which will improve energy efficiency and reduce the condensation risk.
