When Planet Architecture required a quick to install roofing system for The Moorings, a house and office in Bradley undergoing a complete demolition and rebuild, the team opted for the SSR2 Roofing and Cladding system from Catnic.
The lightweight system helped to ensure the building was weathertight as quickly as possible and crucially, also met the aesthetic juxtaposition the architect sought to achieve against the surrounding countryside.
The Moorings, which is situated on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, is home to the small, family-run barge hire business Snaygill Boats. Snaygill’s previous bungalow needed a major redevelopment and as such, was demolished and rebuilt by building and interior specialist Little England.
Project architect, Mik Widdup from Planet Architecture, said of the design: “We wanted to create a building with a real visual appeal that was not only influenced by its environment – but would also stand out from it. Therefore we designed The Moorings to reflect both the portal-framed farm sheds and the more permanent stone buildings that characterise this part of Yorkshire. The SSR2 system provided exactly the aesthetic we wanted. The variety of colours made it a more than viable option. We selected Anthracite Grey as we thought its deep colour complemented the warmth of the timber clad walls.”
Catnic’s pre-coated metal standing seam SSR2 Roofing and Cladding system is an alternative to traditional copper and zinc systems and is seven times lighter than traditional roof tiles.
Designed to last in excess of 40 years with BBA Certification, the SSR2 Roofing and Cladding system is an innovative, lightweight and sustainable solution for conventional pitched roofs as low as 5° degrees. The panels are 100% recyclable, with a carbon footprint that is three times lower than some of the leading eco-designed urban roofing products.
Stephen Petrie, director of Little England added: “We worked closely with the architect to evaluate a number of alternative solutions but none of them could offer the same performance and aesthetic requirements within the necessary budget.
“I was very pleased that SSR2 was selected as we’ve worked with the system before. It is so lightweight; and because it features a simple locking design it’s amazingly easy and quick to work with, especially compared to other systems I have used. We managed to complete a high quality roof in just three weeks.”
