Architectural Profiles Limited says it has long been a champion of Cor-ten steel as a beautiful material for cladding the building envelope, for both roofs and walls.
The warm brown chestnut colouration of the weathered product gives Cor-ten a comfortable and ‘welcoming’ appeal as was appreciated by Dow Jones, architects for the Maggie’s Centre cancer care centre in Cardiff, and Burd Haward, architects for Mottisfont Abbey visitor centre in the New Forest. In both of these award-winning projects a welcoming visual interaction of the buildings with their users was a fundamental requirement.
Alun Jones of Dow Jones Architects said: “The design of The Maggie’s Centre was conceived to reflect the surrounding terrain. Cor-ten faced steel oxidises with the weather at a rate which will depend on the environment and the surroundings thereby blending in with its situation…which was exactly what we were aiming to achieve with the design of Maggie’s Centre.”
At Mottisfont the AP45HR-R roof profile was roll formed by APL at its factory in flint. The walls and roof at Maggie’s were also manufactured in flint as were the bespoke water shutes that can be seen protruding from the roofs of the Maggie’s project.
APL are proud of the many projects they have now provided in Cor-ten and invite architects and designers to visit their new website to see the many different styles of profile which are available to be produced in Cor-ten.
