Protan has helped complete an extension project that will give young people access to an outdoor activity programme and inspire them to be more active.
Growing demand for the Lindley Educational Trust meant an upgrade had to be made to the main building of the Hollowford Centre, which hosts the Trist’s activities.
The front façade has been extended, and a corridor converted and remodelled into a modern reception area featuring a new, curving flat roof and glass floor to ceiling. FCB Roofing, for main contractor TC Williams, constructed the new roof and turned to single ply membrane manufacturer Protan.
The new roof over both the entrance canopy and the new extension, linked with a gutter, comprises plywood decking, a vapour control layer loose laid and sealed, topped with insulation and covered with Protan SE1.2mm dark grey membrane.
For the main roof areas, FCB mechanically secured the Protan membrane through 120mm thick insulation with thermally-broken fixings to achieve a U-Value of 0.18w/m2K to the main roof areas, further strapping and welding the perimeter to address wind uplift arising from the site’s exposed location. The gutter valley between the canopy and new extension was created by mechanically fixing Protan SE membrane over 70mm thick insulation.
Mark Williams, head of centres for Lindley Educational Trust, said: “We needed more space, as more people than ever are accessing our provision, and the old building was in need of repair. We wanted to create a wow factor, a good first impression. The modern image and curved edge of the new roof look great!”
Protan SE single ply membrane – available in 1.2mm, 1.6mm and 1.8mm – is developed to cope with even the most extreme weather conditions without detriment; it is certified to ≤ -30°. The membrane is hot-air welded at joints and mechanically fixed to the roof to achieve durability in excess of 30 years, with air leakage controlled / minimised in line with latest Building Regulations.
Protan SE membrane is also certified to deliver, and potentially surpass, the energy efficiency requirements of Approved Document L, and achieve an A+ rating under the Green Guide,.
Established around 75 years ago and still privately-owned, Protan has roofs that have been in place for 30+ years without performance-affecting degradation. A full support service, from NBS specification and in-house CAD design through to technical advice, is provided from Protan UK’s Warrington office.
