StructureCare has successfully completed a contract for the surfacing of a four-storey structure at a North London hospital, employing systems from its DeckProtect+ range.
The work on the Northwick Park MSCP was carried out on behalf of Huber Car Park Systems UK, while the 702-space facility will be operated for the London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust by APCOA.
Construction of the car park is part of a ‘One Public Estate’ programme involving Brent Council, which is redeveloping land between the 500-bed hospital and Northwick Park itself to deliver 1,600 high quality new homes, as well as improvements to roads, public transport links and new green spaces – plus a new energy centre to serve the site.
A key factor in the award of the contract to StructureCare, part of the CPG Europe Group, is the company’s position within the sector, as both a manufacturer and installer of waterproofing and other well proven car park specific systems.
It has led to StructureCare’s operatives installing 3,523 m2 of DeckProtect+ MMA External across the exposed top deck and 9,616 m2 of DeckProtect+ MMA HB for the intermediate decks.
As is often the case with newbuild car park projects, the programme schedule required StructureCare to begin applying the waterproofing systems before all the access ramps were completed, necessitating alternative access arrangements, as well as having to work in coordination with other specialist sub-contractors.
Installation of the four coat, DeckProtect+ MMA External system, commenced in February this year, as soon as the residual moisture levels fell below 6%, but while the winter weather remained extremely challenging.
Preparatory removal of surface laitance was completed using a ride-on track-blaster, taking off 2-3mm to optimise adhesion for the primer coat, while any shrinkage cracks were filled with an epoxy mortar and ground back. Wind driven rain and condensation dripping from the soffits hampered progress on the intermediate levels, however, StructureCare managed to keep to a demanding 10-week timetable.
The parking bays were coloured blue, while the driving lanes were finished in grey and pedestrian walkways identified in green. The same blue was also used for the nosings throughout the access stairways and finally, for the ground floor level, where block paving predominates, with StructureCare’s team applying line markings and coating the walkways.
Ryan Williams, business development manager for StructureCare, said: “Northwick Park Hospital is a significant project that has created important car parking capacity as the site is undergoing major redevelopment. Huge credit must go to our project manager ross and our operatives, the work was successfully carried out to a tight program and the client is very pleased with the finished product, as are we!”
More information on the DeckProtect+ range is detailed in StructureCare’s new technical brochure, “Versatile & Innovative Deck Coating Systems for Car Park Structures”.
