Roofing apprentices have taken part in one of the regional heats of SkillBuild 2016 at the National Construction College (NCC) Midlands.
All three apprentices completed the task, and Adam Pearson, director of SM Roofing Contracts, presented heat winner Matthew Beagley with the new John Page Memorial Trophy.
The trophy is to be kept at the NCC and awarded each year to whomever demonstrates the necessary skills and attention to detail to win the regional contest and then go on to compete in the final.
John Page passed away in his early eighties after spending his working life as a well-respected roofer in the Midlands area. SM Roofing Contracts says he was a great character and those that worked with him at the company had the greatest respect for him.
Speaking on behalf of the company, Adam Pearson commented: “Mr Page took his trade very seriously and had a great pride in the quality of work that he produced, during his career he trained many young men, most of whom are still working successfully within the industry, these individuals still proudly claim to be ‘Page Trained’ which is a tribute to the respect that they had for John and also indicative of their view of the quality training that they received.”
“It was my privilege to present The John Page Memorial Trophy at the National Construction College, Birmingham.”
13 other regional heats have taken place across England, Scotland and Wales over the past three months, with over 1,000 competitors taking part in 10 different trades. The scores are then compiled and verified, with the top performers invited to the national final in November.
Mr Pearson continued: “SM Roofing Contracts is a firm supporter of apprentices and currently has 14 on board. I believe roofing to be a respected professional trade and back the importance of a well structured career path for people within the industry at all levels.”
