The Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) has called on members to actively support the Green Homes Grant, which launched to the public on 30 September, and work with their trade customers to ensure end-to-end quality in the scheme’s supply chain.

Under the Green Homes Grant scheme, the government has made £2 billion available to improve the energy efficiency of existing homes, helping homeowners to save up to £600 a year on their energy bills. A further £1 billion has been earmarked to upgrade public buildings.

The scheme has the potential to improve the energy efficiency of over 600,000 homes and to support 100,000 jobs. Tradespeople need to be TrustMark registered to carry out home improvements under the scheme.

The BMF, which is working in partnership with TrustMark on the project, has called on merchant members to encourage their trade customers to get involved. A dedicated page on the TrustMark website will also list those BMF members who are actively supporting the scheme through the manufacture or supply of suitable products.

John Newcomb, chief executive officer of the BMF, said: The Green Homes Grant is a fantastic opportunity for merchants to work alongside their installer customers to help homeowners upgrade their homes, with the government paying for much of the work.

“The initial scheme is running for a limited time and more accredited tradespeople are needed to carry out the work. The BMF printed 50,000 leaflets for our merchant members to pass on to customers in advance of the launch, explaining the scheme and encouraging them to get involved.  By working together, we can make the Green Homes Grant a success.”
