Bridging the skills gap

North West Roof Training Group will be showcasing at the forthcoming Forces in Construction Insight event being held at Coleg Cambria, Connah’s Quay on October 10.

All ranks and backgrounds of ex-service and ‘soon to leave’ ex-service personnel, and family members, will be meeting national and North West-based construction and civil engineering employers and checking out the employment, career and training opportunities available to them in the North West.

The Ministry of Defence, Careers Transition Partnership and CITB Wales have come up with this two-fold event, with presentations taking place in the conference hall alongside a fully subscribed exhibition of employers in the sports hall, including Kier, Jennings, Willmott Dixon, Redrow, Watkin Jones etc. Whether hoping for a fresh start and/or a new career direction, job seekers will find a “wealth of opportunities”.

Sue Wharton, group training officer at NW Roof Training Group, said: “Here’s an opportunity for us to reach out to this untapped source of labour. It’s forecast that here in the North West, some 550 additional staff will be required within the next four years. Our own display will focus on training opportunities and career paths within the roofing industry, and exploring this market is critical to our efforts to support our members. The fact that NFRC members, Avonside Group Services and Longworth Building Services have chosen to support us by accepting our invitation to exhibit, indicates their eagerness to offer openings in a wide range of fields within the industry, as they too, acknowledge the potential in this market. Redland Tiles, now part of the BMI Group and NFRC Supplier Member, has been generous in their offer of practical displays of roofing and DMR Training & Consultancy, new Roofing Apprentice Training Providers and long-time Roofing Assessors, will be showcasing training opportunities across construction within the region.”
