Russell Roof Tiles has raised £2,200 for Macmillan Cancer Support – one of its nominated charities for 2015 – as part of its half century celebrations.

Staff from the company’s two Burton on Trent factories and head office joined colleagues at the Lochmaben factory to enjoy a family fun day, attended by over 200 staff and families. The tile factory yard was specially transformed by the team to create a venue appropriate for the festivities.

As well as fundraising, Russell Roof Tiles laid on a whole afternoon of events for the staff and their families, all funded by the company. Entertainment included stalls, fun and games such as a bouncy castle, penalty shoot-out, children’s entertainer, hog roast, music and jousting, while money was raised through a cake sale, raffle, quiz and sponge throwing at the senior management in the stocks.

Russell Roof Tiles’ 11 acre Lochmaben site was first founded in 1964 as the Annandale Tile Company and still manufactures concrete roof tiles and accessories used across the UK. As well as enjoying the celebrations, families were given an opportunity to take a tour of the hand fitting and utility plant.

Mary Colburn (nee Gibson), the daughter of the founder of the Annandale Tile Company, who was also in attendance, said: “I’m delighted that the team is celebrating 50 years since my father first established the factory. I’m proud to see that today’s management is investing in building this business, my father’s legacy. He would have been very pleased to see the festivities and that the company he founded is still going strong.”

Russell Roof Tiles has invested in the Lochmaben site over the years, with £250,000 invested in 2013 to upgrade and improve the factory, securing local jobs and enabling the staff numbers to increase by 20%.

Andrew Hayward, managing director at Russell Roof Tiles, said: “This is a very special year for the business and 2015 marks a huge milestone for the factory in Lochmaben.

“We’re very pleased that not only the staff who work so hard for the company enjoyed the event, but that we were able to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support who provide such excellent support for the community.

“This event was a special thank you for all of the dedication and enthusiasm of our staff over the years without whom we would not be successfully manufacturing today.”
