Siemens and Knauf Insulation strengthen sustainability partnership

Siemens has strengthened its strategic partnership with Knauf Insulation, the UK provider of glass and rock mineral wool insulation solutions.

The next phase of the partnership will focus on enhancing efficiency at Knauf Insulation’s glass mineral wool plant in Cwmbran, South Wales. This builds on the work begun in 2015 at the company’s St Helens plant, which has already significantly improved the plant’s energy efficiency. Across the two plants, the partnership is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 5,000 tonnes per year – equivalent to the annual energy use of almost 800 homes.

Against the background of the UK government’s and global concerns on environment, Siemens CEO, Juergen Maier, explained: “Siemens has a very ambitious vision to become carbon neutral by 2030, which we are on target to achieve. Another key aim is to build collaborative relationships within the global industrial landscape to reduce our supply chain and customer’s carbon footprint. We are delighted to form this strategic partnership with Knauf Insulation in the UK.”

Steve Martin, head of Strategic Transformation at Siemens UK, added: “We look forward to partnering with Knauf Insulation to deliver a comprehensive energy management programme that will use intelligent technologies not only to monitor where consumption is taking place and to what extent, but also implement a significant reduction in energy use across the company’s UK manufacturing plant asset base.

John Sinfield, managing director for Knauf Insulation Northern Europe, said: “Our non-combustible insulation solutions are playing a critical role in delivering on the UK’s energy efficiency targets. We have another role to play by ensuring our products are manufactured as sustainably as possible. Our partnership with Siemens will help us to reduce our energy consumption further, in Cwmbran and beyond, so we can continue to meet the UK’s demand for sustainable, high performance insulation.”
